BBBS HISTORY

Morgan County

Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Morgan County was organized in May of 1962.  In 1966, when the organization first received support from the United Way, sufficient resources were available to hire a part-time director to oversee the administration of the many Big Brother/Big Sister programs. Several individuals served in this capacity until 1972 when a full-time director was hired.
Since that time the Association has grown stronger in pairings and has initiated a program of recreational activities for the children and adults in the organization. Here are the Executive Directors responsible for this success:  Carol White (1973-1976); Pat Harris (1976-1984); John Kelker (1984-1996); Lori Large (1996-1999); Brian Ganz (1999-Present).
In 1991, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morgan County became affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Adams County

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Adams County was started by LaVerne Norton as her graduate thesis project at the St. Louis University.  She became the program coordinator at Catholic Charities in Quincy, which adopted Big Brothers Big Sisters into their organization.  In the mid-1970’s BBBS became part of Family Services of Adams County, and remained a part of this organization for 4 years.  In November of 1979 BBBS was incorporated into the Volunteer Action Center, and was part of the center for 7 years.
BBBS was incorporated into the YMCA in July of 1986 and in March of 1987 entered into the affiliation process with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, becoming a full member in July of 1991.  BBBS became an independent agency in December of 2002 and became known as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Adams County.

West Central Illinois

A consolidation with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Adams County January 1, 2003 created Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Central Illinois (BBBS of WCI).  This allowed for the pooling of resources in Adams and Morgan Counties to be able to serve youth more effectively.  A board was formed to govern BBBS of WCI, keeping the Advisory Councils on the county level.  In 2004, BBBS of WCI expanded services to Brown and Schuyler counties, forming one advisory council for the two counties.  In 2006 BBBS of WCI also expanded services to Cass County, forming another advisory council.
